Spinal Cord Stimulation
If you are suffering from chronic pain in your arms or legs, Dr. Isaac Tong may recommend a spinal cord stimulator. This system stimulates certain parts of the spinal cord through electrical signals. battery. A spinal cord stimulator involves the following:
-
An implantable pulse generator with battery that produces electrical signals
-
A lead with multiple electrodes that deliver the electrical impulses to the spinal cord
-
An extension wire that connects the pulse generator to the lead
-
A manually operated remote that adjusts the electrical signals
A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) is surgically implanted in the tissue of the lower back beneath the skin. A SCS transmits electric signals to disrupt the pain signals from the brain, which helps relieve the pain. A SCS is most effective in managing chronic pain in the lower extremities or the back. It can also relieve pain associated with disorders such as sciatica, complex regional pain syndrome or failed back surgery syndrome.
Before we implant the simulator, our physician will perform a trial implantation. A trial implantation involves placing the stimulator on the spinal cord. If the trial implantation reduces the intensity of the pain, we will permanently place the stimulator.
After the stimulator has been placed, you will usually be discharged the day of or the day after the procedure.
