Nerve Blocks
Nerve blocks, or neural blockades, may be recommended to help prevent or manage pain. They are injections of medicines that block pain from specific nerves. Dr. Isaac Tong typically recommends nerve blocks for chronic pain, back and neck pain, pain after surgery, severe acute pain or short-term pain.
Nerve blocks require needles, along with a fluoroscope, ultrasound or CT scan to properly guide the needle. Low-level electrical stimulation may also be used to locate the nerve that is causing pain. The needle and guided images can then be used to inject the nerve blocker, numbing the area and halting the pain messages coming from the nerves in the treated area. Nerve blocks offer immediate relief so that you can function better in your daily life.
Common uses for nerve blocks include:
-
Easing pain during and after surgeries
-
Managing pain of inuries or chronic health conditions
-
Managing spinal pain
-
Managing debilitating pain of the arms, legs, neck and buttocks
-
Managing cancer-related pain
-
Managing pain from arthritis
-
Treating headaches, including migraines and occipital neuralgia
-
Treating chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
-
Helping to pinpoint the cause and source of pain
-
Nerve blocks may be temporary or longer lasting. There are several types of surgical and non-surgical nerve blocks which may be recommended, depending on your needs.
