Epidurals
An epidural is a type of injection that is used to decrease chronic pain or inflammation.
Epidurals can provide significant pain relief to the following conditions without surgery:
-
Herniated disc
-
Sciatica
-
Knee or hip arthritis
-
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy
-
Tendinitis or bursitis
-
Spinal stenosis
Our physician may recommend an epidural to relieve patients from the pain of any of the above conditions. An epidural is used to treat and relieve severe pain.
An epidural is the injection of corticosteroid medication into the epidural space of the spinal column. During the procedure, our physician will apply a local skin anesthetic to numb the site of the injection, and then will insert the spinal needle into the epidural space. We will use X-ray guidance during the procedure to help ensure the needle is placed correctly. Through the needle, both local anesthetic and the corticosteroid medication will be delivered into the epidural space. These medications are used to reduce the swelling around the nerve roots, which should relieve any pressure or pain. The epidural specifically targets the nerves that carry pain signals, so you should still be able to feel touch and normal pressure.
An epidural is usually repeated more than once to provide maximum results. We generally provide at least three injections, but you may feel relief after just one or two injections.
