CRPS is a chronic pain condition that often affects limbs following injury. It is believed to be caused by damage to the peripheral and central nervous system, and is characterized by prolonged or excessive pain, changes in skin color, temperature and swelling in the affected area. There are several types of treatment that may be effective in managing CRPS, including:

  • Rehabilitation Therapy – Exercise programs which keep the affected limb or body part moving. This works to improve blood flow and lessen circulatory symptoms of CRPS.

  • Psychotherapy – This condition is often associated with psychological symptoms, and individuals with CRPS may develop depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. This can heighten the perception of pain and require treatment in order to make rehabilitation easier.

  • Medications – Medication has been shown to be effective in treating CRPS, especially when it is provided early in the course of the disease. Some individuals also report temporary pain for sympathetic nerve blocks.

  • Spinal Cord Stimulation – Stimulating electrodes can be placed into the spine near the spinal cord to provide a tingling sensation in the painful area. Minor surgery is needed to implant all parts, and once implanted, the electrodes can be turned on and off and adjusted through an external controller
